Unit 6: Introduction to Intercultural Communication
Overview
This unit addresses the complexities of intercultural communication and will help you understand how culture shapes interactions and influences our behaviour. While it is common to think of intercultural communication as interactions between people from different countries, this unit emphasizes that cultural differences often exist within the same nation. Factors such as regional variations, language differences, urban and rural divides, and individual experiences all play a significant role in how we communicate with one another. Culture is not just about nationality — it is about the many layers of identity that define us and shape our worldview.
You’ll explore key theories that provide frameworks for understanding these cultural interactions. The unit introduces models including Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, which offer insights into how power distance, individualism, and uncertainty avoidance influence communication across cultures. You’ll also learn about Trompenaars’s seven dimensions, which highlight how cultures prioritize relationships, time, and emotional expression differently. These theories serve as tools to uncover the deeper, often invisible elements of culture that lie beneath the surface, much like the iceberg metaphor used in the unit to explain cultural nuances.
In addition, the unit covers Stella Ting-Toomey’s face negotiation theory, which examines how cultures handle conflict and maintain social harmony through the concept of “face.” You’ll see how communication styles can differ dramatically depending on whether a culture is high-context or low-context, and how these differences impact verbal and non-verbal interactions. The final sections discuss the challenges of overcoming ethnocentrism and moving from a monocultural to an intercultural mindset using the Intercultural Development Continuum. These theories and models will guide you as you navigate diverse cultural settings, preparing you for more effective and empathetic communication in a globalized world.
The reading in this unit, with its focus on intercultural communication theory, will help you to complete the quiz at the end of the unit and prepare for your next assignment in the course.
